After living in Manhattan for the past five years, I’m going to move to one of the other boroughs. Even though I liked living in Manhattan, I think it’s time to make this change for these reasons:
- I would like to lower my cost of living significantly. Since I’m planning to quit my job and work full time for myself sometime in the near future, I want to make the transition as easy as possible.
- I don’t think it makes sense to spend the amount of money I’m paying on housing regardless of my financial situation. Even though these are the prices in Manhattan and I have a pretty good deal with my apartment, I still think it doesn’t make sense. This money could be spent on something better like travel.
- Living in one of the other boroughs would be cheaper but the difference in commute and life quality would not be significant. There are nice neighborhoods out there and it will only extend the commute by a few subway stops which will be no more than 15 minutes.
- I’m a little tired of living here. The walk to the subway on my morning commute requires walking through big crowds of people which I don’t like. The subway is crowded and there are many loud groups of tourists.
I’m thinking about moving to Queens, Brooklyn or Hoboken. Hoboken also has the advantage of not paying the NY city tax.
